CAR FOUND ABANDONED IN SOLWAY

Coastguard try to trace owners

POLICE and coastguards are trying to trace the owners of a Frontera estate found abandoned in the sea late on Tuesday.

The Vauxhall made vehicle was discovered half a mile out into the Solway Firth in Cardoness Bay, near Sandgreen, Gatehouse of Fleet.

But there was no trace of the owners and Dumfries and Galloway Police are trying to find out the owner and who was in it.

One theory is that cocklers may have become trapped as the fast-flowing Solway tide came in,

Liverpool Coastguards were notified by a member of the public.

The vehicle was completely submerged by the day-time-tide and spokesman for the coastguard said: “We don’t know how or when the vehicle became stuck.

“A member of the public notified police but the tide completely submerged the vehicle and it was late afternoon before we could get coastguards to it.

“We sent men out later in the day after we were told by police. It appears to have been abandoned and we are trying to find out who owns it.”

Cockle fishing on the Solway Firth has been officially closed for several years.

A police spokesman said: “We are looking into the incident.”
