Curlers prepare for world record bid
TEN of the region’s curlers are preparing to smash a world record next month.
They will take to the ice on March 1 at 10 am and hope to play for 72 hours, smashing the current record of 57 hours and 44 seconds.
The ten-man squad is made up of two teams, team one features Graham Sloan, David Owen, Scott Robertson, Graham Black, and James Findlay.
And team two is Ruariadh Whyte, Stuart Henderson, Neil Henderson, Chris Jardine and Duncan Gracie.
The boys have increased their fitness programmes in an attempt to get in top condition before putting themselves through the gruelling challenge.
Curling development officer Graham Sloan said: “We only started looking in to the possibility of attempting the world record a few months ago and it has been snowballing ever since.
“There is a real buzz around the Ice Bowl and the team has been receiving great amounts of support and help from the facility and local curlers.”
As well as developing curling across the region, funds will go towards upgrading the current stones.
Graham explained that upgrading the stones would bring them up to competition standard, allowing the Ice Bowl to start bidding for national and international events.
He said: “This would have a huge knock on effect to the region with more people visiting the area while at competitions.
“Scottish and European Championships would certainly be on the facility radar.”
They look to break the record between 6 pm and 8 pm on Saturday and hope to continue through to Sunday.
Members of the public are encourage to get involved in the attempt by coming along to support, have a go with a curling stone and take part in fundraising challenges.
Any businesses interested in sponsoring the team should visit the team’s website www.curlingworldrecord.co.uk or call the ice rink on 01387 251300.

TEAMS will compete four against four with the fifth player rotating in when someone requires a rest.
They will generate a five minute break for every fully completed hour and breaks can be accumulated to allow longer breaks for meals, toilet stops or power naps.
