Queens face tough New Year
ROCK bottom Queen of the South have a fight on their hands after their worst 12 month spell for many years.
Manager Gus MacPherson is struggling to get his side on a winning run and up next for the Doonhamers is a crunch match on January 2 at home to Hamilton Accies.
And his new year wish is to lift his side from the bottom of the table and give the long-suffering fans something to shout about.
Victory would hoist Queens level on points with Accies but defeat would leave them struggling.
The Boxing Day defeat at Firhill left Queens bottom with 16 points while second bottom Ayr United, a point above, have two games in hand.
MacPherson admitted: “We’ve only managed one away win so far this season and that was against Raith Rovers. Now we’ve got to get things going on Tuesday in front of our own fans.”
Once more MacPherson said it was an defensive error that gave Thistle the vital break and left Queens floundering.
He moaned: “There wasn’t much in it for the first 45 minutes but we lost an important goal just after. It really dented our confidence.”
Queens chairman David Rae is also trying to put 2011 behind him as he prepares to hand over the reigns when the season ends.
During the past 12 months Queens have had only 14 victories out of 45 starts and he said: “We have ten home league games to play and a cup-tie against Partick Thistle. So there`s still a long way to go and plenty of points to play for.”
